New Engen Polo cup pace-setter emerges at Zwartkops raceway

  • Tasmin Pepper takes both race victories
  • She sets a new Zwartkops Engen Polo Cup lap record
  • Jeffrey Kruger retains championship lead
Drama, a new winner, a new lap record and spectacular racing typified rounds five and six of this year’s Engen Polo Cup Championship at the Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria on Saturday, May 12. Since the series participants had spent two days testing at Zwartkops prior to the start of the season, everybody was wise to car setup procedures plus the where and whys of their Push to Pass systems, which they would be able to use eight times each per race. Official Qualifying As expected, competition at the 2,4 kilometre venue was desperately close. After Saturday morning’s Official Qualifying and Superpole sessions, the times of the quickest 14 Engen Polo Cup drivers were covered by a second on the grid. Lady racer Tasmin Pepper (Electric Life Polo) sat on pole position, ahead of Clinton Bezuidenhout (Glyco Polo), title points leader Jeffrey Kruger (Universal Health Polo), Darren Oates (Payen Polo), Justin Oates (URUP Polo) and Delon Thompson (A&L Materials Polo). Completing the top ten were Jonathan Mogotsi (VW Motorsport Polo), Daniel Duminy (SMD Group Polo), Charl Wilken (Cronje’s Auto Body Polo) and Keegan Campos (Campos Transport Polo). Race One The race was red-flagged after about 20 seconds, when Bezuidenhout was nudged into a spin in the first corner, causing alarm and despondency behind him. His car was collected by those of Wilken, Jason Campos (Campos Transport Polo) and Simon Need (Photonics Polo), with all four vehicles too damaged to continue. After the restart Pepper backed her qualifying performance by grabbing the race lead and opening up a gap between herself and the rest of the pack. She eventually finished four seconds ahead of Kruger, with Darren Oates, Justin Oates, Mogotsi and Duminy in close attendance. Keegan Campos (Turn I Polo), Thompson, Shaun La Reservee (Alpine Motors Polo) and schoolboy Altan Bouw (Ferodo Polo) filled out the top ten places. Afterwards, Jeffrey Kruger was excluded from the results due to his part in the first corner fracas. Race Two Starting from pole position again, Pepper led from the lights to the flag. She also set a new Engen Polo Cup lap record of 1 minute 12,580 seconds at Zwartkops. Kruger came in second, ahead of Justin Oates, Darren Oates, Thompson, Paulus Franken (Manitou Group Polo), La Reservee, Mogotsi, Keegan Campos and Duminy. Overall results Pepper ended up as the day’s overall winner, ahead of Justin Oates, Darren Oates, Thomas, Mogotsi, La Reservee, Keegan Campos, Duminy, Franken, Benjamin Habig (Just Tools Polo), Bouw and Shivesh Bissoon (Etch Tech Polo). The next rounds of the 2018 Engen Polo Cup Championship will be held at the East London Grand Prix circuit on Saturday, June 3. SA exporters welcome latest edition of fresh produce export directory

The South African Fresh Produce Exporters Forum (FPEF) has launched the 2018 edition of the Fresh Produce Export Directory at the Fruit Logistica Trade Fair in Berlin. The Export Directory contains information about the South African fresh fruit and vegetable exports, including details of its members, fruit varieties and statistics about fresh fruit export volumes, exports periods, and export destinations of South African fresh fruit.

Attending the official launch at the South African Pavilion, the Trading Operations Manager of Unifruit. which is based in Somerset West in the Western Cape, Mr Riaan Ellis said as the citrus and table grape exporter, the export directory is an extension of many of their marketing tools in terms of attracting new clientele and business.

“Our main focus as a business is to continuously expand our export market regions that we have not made an impact yet. We received a lot of emails throughout the year from potential importers all around the world who have seen our details in that book. So to me the book is essential for South African exporters and we are grateful that the country has such an initiative to support the industry,” said Ellis.

The Managing Director of Sino Gold, Mr Carl van der Westhuizen said it is every exporter’s vision to have a global footprint and also to promote their respective brands through the export directory.

He added that since he company has been featured in the directory, their export sales of table grapes, apples and pear has steadily grown over years.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of FPEF, Mr Anton Kruger, the directory is published annually as a service to, and a source of information for the international fresh produce trading community.

He said as a non-profit organisation with more than 130 members of fresh fruit and vegetable exporters and other services, the organisation prints 5 000 copies of the publication each year and is also available online.

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies recently highlighted the need to assist Small and Medium Enterprises to penetrate new emerging markets in terms of market access   particularly the European Union and Asia. Therefore, the Export Directory will support South Africa’s positioning as a supplier of choice.
Twenty-five South Africa businesspeople have assisted by the dti to participate in the Fruit Logistica Berlin Trade Fair that started earlier week. The trade fair covers every sector of the international fruit and vegetable supply chain from production, distribution and marketing, through to the point of sale, including global players as well as small and medium-sized suppliers from all around the world.

B-BBEE commission to host conference on improving state procurement

B-BBEE commission to host annual conference on improving state procurement for real economic empowerment State procurement will come under the spotlight at the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) Commission’s annual conference that will take place at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand on Thursday, 15 March 2018.   The theme of the conference, Improving State Procurement for Real Empowerment, aimed at finding effective ways in which the state can make B-BBEE a reality for black South Africans and to achieve the objectives of the B-BBEE Act.   According to the Commissioner of the B-BBEE Commission, Ms Zodwa Ntuli, the conference will focus on state procurement, grants, incentives, licensing and concessions as means to achieve real economic transformation and provide black people with access to opportunities.   “B-BBEE can be utilised to bring about economic transformation and access to opportunities and markets by black people through procurement, grants, incentives, licensing and other concessions, and processes within the state must align fully with this purpose. We hope to have accounting officers, procurement officers and chief operating officers from all spheres of government, state-owned entities and the private sector to exchange views on what is expected of them in practice,” says Ntuli.   Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Gratitude Magwanishe, who inspired the theme for this year’s conference emphasised the need to accelerate Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment, especially for the most marginalised groups such as black women, workers and young people in light of opportunities that the B-BBEE Act presents but not fully realised by government through procurement, licences, concessions, etc.   “Every organ of state and public entity must use procurement, incentives and grants more effectively to drive economic empowerment to support more black entrepreneurs and enterprises that can also deliver the job opportunities required by our economy. Thus every entrepreneur, small and big enterprises, women and youth owned businesses, can benefit immensely from this conference, and network with members of the public and corporate sectors,” says Magwanishe.   It is expected that the conference will provide guidance on the requirements of the B-BBEE Act, development of internal procedures to support compliance, reporting requirements, ways to identify noncompliance and fronting practices, as well as alignment between procurement and B-BBEE requirements.   The B-BBEE Commission is established in terms of Section 13B of the amended B-BBEE Act No 46 of 2013. The Commission’s mandate, amongst others, is to supervise and encourage adherence to the B-BBEE Act in the interest of the public, to promote good governance and accountability by creating an effective and efficient environment for the promotion and implementation of the objectives of broad-based black economic empowerment.   Issued on behalf of the B-BBEE Commission by: Sidwell Medupe – Departmental Spokesperson Department of Trade and Industry Tel: +27 12 394 1650 Mobile: +27 79 492 1774 E-mail: MSMedupe@thedti.gov.za Follow us on Twitter: @the_dti
