50 000 jobs sustained through the workplace challenge programme

The Chief Director of Space affairs at the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti), Ms Nomfuneko Majaja says that the Workplace Challenge Programme (WPC) has led to the sustaining of more than 50 000 jobs and creating a further 250 since it was founded. Majaja pronounced on this remarkable milestone during the 20-year anniversary celebrations of the Workplace Challenge Programme which took place in Botshabelo, Free State.  The WPC Programme is a joint initiative of the dti and Productivity South Africa (Productivity SA) that is implemented over a 24-month period with the aim to encouraging and supporting negotiated workplace change to improve productivity and job creation.  Majaja further mentioned that enterprises that had participated in the WPC programme had been collectively funded to the tune of R151 million and had generated more than R1.88 billion in total turnover.  “These figures are a sure sign of progress and we must sustain it and forge partnerships with the WPC programme to support our flagship programmes such as the Black Industrialists Programme, the Industrial Park Revitalisation Programme and the Special Economic Zones Programme. We also see the WPC Programme building a competitive manufacturing sector within the Industrial Policy Action Plan,” she said. Majaja further outlined that a web-based monitoring and evaluation system has since been launched in order to measure the impact of the WPC on participating companies.   The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Productivity SA, Mr Mothunye Mothiba appealed to prospective entrepreneurs to generate ideas amongst each other, to test the feasibility of success of these ideas and to pursue those that demonstrate potential of success.  “We must accept that productivity is the most effective tool to maximise production, especially amongst our small and medium enterprises as they are the catalysts for economic growth. By helping our enterprises enroll on the WPC Programme we will be equipping them with the means to reduce poverty, unemployment and inequality,” said Mothiba. Mothiba also announced on the upcoming national Workplace Challenge programme national awards that will take place on Friday, 19 October 2018.  “The productivity revolution will be embarked on post the awards especially in Botshabelo; where there were fewer economic opportunities for Summer. We will be recognising enterprises that have embraced the WPC and turned their strategies for the better,” he said.  Caption: The Chief Director of Space affairs Ms Nomfuneko Majaja  Enquiries: Mr Sidwell Medupe                                                       the dti Departmental Spokesperson Tel: 012 394 1650 Mobile: 079 492 1774 Email: MSMedupe@thedti.gov.za Follow us on @the_dti   or   Mr Maupi Monyemangene Media Liaison Manager; Productivity SA  Telephone +27 (0) 11 848 5397 Mobile +27824473232

Minister Rob Davies to attend the G20 Trade Ministers Meeting

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies will attend the G20 Trade Ministers Meeting on 14 September 2018 in Mar del Plata, Argentina. The Trade Ministers meeting will be preceded by the Trade and Investment Working Group meeting. The Trade Ministers Meeting will focus on key factors for G20 policy making to support participation and upgrading in inclusive Global Value Chains (GVCs) in the agricultural sector at regional and global level. It will also provide a platform for an exchange of experiences on how G20 countries can address the challenges associated with disruptive changes presented by the New Industrial Revolution/ the Fourth Industrial Revolution and leverage the opportunities in order to advance inclusive growth. Minister Davies says GVCs have led to a reconfiguration of trade and investment flows. “Location in the value chain is a critical determinant to how benefits are shared. African countries participate in GVCs mainly as suppliers of primary products. What is required is to preserve policy space to move-up the value chain into production of high-value products in order to promote meaningful participation in GVCs. The NIR on the other hand is leading to unprecedented disruptions in trade and production. The G20 offers an opportunity for the exchange of views on global developments, regulatory framework and policy responses that facilitate leveraging the NIR and managing the challenges to promote inclusive growth.” said Davies. According to Minister Davies, G20 engagements provide South Africa with a platform to discuss, assess, and advance economic and policy issues, and for knowledge transfer on policy practices to foster the country’s development objectives. It also provides a platform for the exchange of views on the current developments in global trade.  “The G20 Trade Ministers is taking place at a time when the multilateral trading system is facing unprecedented challenges. Of concern is the rise of trade measures that are not compatible with the WTO. The G20 Trade Ministers meeting will provide an opportunity for a dialogue on current developments in international trade and its implications for the global economy”, states Davies.  Minister Davies emphasises that South Africa’s participation at the Trade and Investment Ministerial Meeting is to contribute to and shape global trade and investment policy debates by providing views from a developing country standpoint. Davies highlights that the core objective for South Africa in engaging in the G20 is to advance a development oriented perspective in all the issues under discussion that preserves policy space to advance South Africa and Africa’s development integration, promote inclusive growth and structural transformation.  Enquiries: Sidwell Medupe-Departmental Spokesperson Tel: (012) 394 1650 Mobile: 079 492 1774 E-mail: MSMedupe@thedti.gov.za Issued by: The Department of Trade and Industry Follow us on Twitter: @the_dti

Sugar value-chain task team has been established to address the challenges facing the industry

A sugar stakeholders meeting that was held at the Department of Trade and Industry’s (the dti) Sunnyside Campus in Pretoria, to discuss the imminent challenges faced by the Sugar Industry, has resolved to establish a Sugar Value-Chain Task Team. The Task Team is between government and the private sector and composed of representatives from Beverage Industry, Retailers, South African Sugar Association (Sasa), small holder farmers, small manufacturers and the Industrial Development Cooperation. The aim of the task team is to seek rapid solutions to the challenges facing the industry focusing on short, medium to long term plans.  The meeting was co-chaired by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies and the Minister of Economic Development, Ebrahim Patel.   The first meeting of the Task Team will be held on Wednesday, 30 May 2018. It is expected that joint recommendations from the Task Team will be submitted to the Ministers concerned. The was a view that through collaboration between Government and Private Sector some better solutions in terms of inclusive growth, transformation, competitiveness and sustainability of the industry can be attained   According to the report from SASA Chairman, Mr. Suresh Naidoo, the biggest threat to the industry has been the sustained increase of deep sea sugar imports, peaking at just around 500 000 tons in 2017/18 season. The effect is that this imports displace locally produced sugar into the depressed global sugar market.   The South African Farmers Development Association (Safda) stated that the prices for the sugar cane have declined to such an extent that some growers have received negative statements at the end of the season and in fact owe to the millers.   Safda is of the view that local producers cannot compete against subsidised foreign countries and the sugar producing countries around the world offer their sugar industry a range of policy support measures to protect them against distorted world market.    The Beverage Industry made proposals regarding proposed interventions in support of small holder farmers in the sugar industry and also how to improve productivity in the sugar value chain.   Sugar is a strategic industry in South Africa, contributing an estimated R14-billion to the gross domestic product. The industry employs 85,000 people directly, and indirectly provides work for a further 350,000 people in food processing and other industries.   Issued jointly by the Departments of Economic Development, Forestry & Fisheries and Trade & Industry   Enquiries: Sidwell Medupe-Departmental Spokesperson Tel: (012) 394 1650 Mobile: 079 492 1774 E-mail: MSMedupe@thedti.gov.za Follow us on Twitter: @the_dti
