Soshanguve learners to get automotive skills

Wednesday, April 10, 2019

The upgraded Soshanguve School of Specialisation, which specialises in automotive engineering, is set to boost the technical skills and creativity among school learners.

The Gauteng Government is introducing School of Specialisation (SoS) to nurture talent in young people across key disciplines and develop the country’s future leaders.

SoS are intended to respond to the skills shortage and unemployment crisis among the youth in the country by equipping learners with the skills and knowledge to give them the best chance of success in life.

Speaking at the opening of the school in Pretoria on Tuesday, Gauteng Premier David Makhura said Gauteng is a province on the move and is modernising the public education system to ensure that learners get quality education.

“We are changing the manner in which the public education system, especially in the township, is perceived. We are training a new generation of young people who must have skills while still in high school. We do not want them to wait until tertiary for skills training and development,” the Premier said.

Automotive giant BMW Group South Africa donated one of its new X3 model for educational purposes. BMW said the donation illustrates their continued commitment to education and to the community in Soshanguve, where so many Associates who work at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn live.

“We are excited about our partnership with BMW SA, who donated and will hand over one of its first model X3s to the school for educational gain to our learners. Among others they will also support the school with training services and material. This is revolution and quality education we are advocating for which learners will benefit from,” said Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi. – SAnews.gov.za

Government remains committed to further support investment and development of the automotive industry in line with the National Industrial Policy Action Framework and the Industrial Policy Action Plan.

Volvo Cars to expand production following overwhelming demand for XC40

Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, has received almost 80,000 orders for the new award-winning XC40 small SUV and is expanding production in Europe and China in order to meet demand. Production will be expanded at its Ghent manufacturing plant and Volvo Cars will add XC40 production capacity at its Luqiao plant in China in the first half of next year, underlining the popularity of this year’s European Car of the Year. In addition, the company has also announced today that it will capitalise on the popularity of its new smaller models with the introduction of new models on its Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), replacing the current V40. “The XC40’s success has surpassed even our highest expectations,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars. “The small SUV segment is the fastest-growing segment in the industry now, and with these additional CMA-based models we expect to benefit further from that growth.” The coming new models based on CMA will include fully electric vehicles and will be sold globally in all major regions. More product details will be disclosed at a later stage. The XC40 was launched in late 2017 to global acclaim and was the first ever Volvo to win European Car of the Year in March of this year. The new XC40 is the first model on Volvo Cars’ new CMA vehicle architecture. Co-developed with Geely Holding, CMA provides Volvo Cars with the necessary economies of scale for this segment. In March, Volvo Cars announced it will produce cars for its new sister brand Lynk & Co at the Ghent plant. Like the XC40, the first Lynk & Co model is based on CMA. Locally, the XC40 is following the global trend of high demand. According to Volvo Car South Africa MD, Greg Maruszewski “Our initial allocation of 350 vehicles sold out before many even arrived in the country, so we have increased our XC40 volume to 700 units for the year. The XC40 is making a big impact in the local SUV segment.” Media enquiries: Astrid de la Rey | Public Relations Manager | www.volvocars.co.za / www.volvocars.com Mail: astrid.delarey@volvocars.com | Phone: +27 12 450 4944 | Mobile: +27 72 602 7700

New Engen Polo cup pace-setter emerges at Zwartkops raceway

  • Tasmin Pepper takes both race victories
  • She sets a new Zwartkops Engen Polo Cup lap record
  • Jeffrey Kruger retains championship lead
Drama, a new winner, a new lap record and spectacular racing typified rounds five and six of this year’s Engen Polo Cup Championship at the Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria on Saturday, May 12. Since the series participants had spent two days testing at Zwartkops prior to the start of the season, everybody was wise to car setup procedures plus the where and whys of their Push to Pass systems, which they would be able to use eight times each per race. Official Qualifying As expected, competition at the 2,4 kilometre venue was desperately close. After Saturday morning’s Official Qualifying and Superpole sessions, the times of the quickest 14 Engen Polo Cup drivers were covered by a second on the grid. Lady racer Tasmin Pepper (Electric Life Polo) sat on pole position, ahead of Clinton Bezuidenhout (Glyco Polo), title points leader Jeffrey Kruger (Universal Health Polo), Darren Oates (Payen Polo), Justin Oates (URUP Polo) and Delon Thompson (A&L Materials Polo). Completing the top ten were Jonathan Mogotsi (VW Motorsport Polo), Daniel Duminy (SMD Group Polo), Charl Wilken (Cronje’s Auto Body Polo) and Keegan Campos (Campos Transport Polo). Race One The race was red-flagged after about 20 seconds, when Bezuidenhout was nudged into a spin in the first corner, causing alarm and despondency behind him. His car was collected by those of Wilken, Jason Campos (Campos Transport Polo) and Simon Need (Photonics Polo), with all four vehicles too damaged to continue. After the restart Pepper backed her qualifying performance by grabbing the race lead and opening up a gap between herself and the rest of the pack. She eventually finished four seconds ahead of Kruger, with Darren Oates, Justin Oates, Mogotsi and Duminy in close attendance. Keegan Campos (Turn I Polo), Thompson, Shaun La Reservee (Alpine Motors Polo) and schoolboy Altan Bouw (Ferodo Polo) filled out the top ten places. Afterwards, Jeffrey Kruger was excluded from the results due to his part in the first corner fracas. Race Two Starting from pole position again, Pepper led from the lights to the flag. She also set a new Engen Polo Cup lap record of 1 minute 12,580 seconds at Zwartkops. Kruger came in second, ahead of Justin Oates, Darren Oates, Thompson, Paulus Franken (Manitou Group Polo), La Reservee, Mogotsi, Keegan Campos and Duminy. Overall results Pepper ended up as the day’s overall winner, ahead of Justin Oates, Darren Oates, Thomas, Mogotsi, La Reservee, Keegan Campos, Duminy, Franken, Benjamin Habig (Just Tools Polo), Bouw and Shivesh Bissoon (Etch Tech Polo). The next rounds of the 2018 Engen Polo Cup Championship will be held at the East London Grand Prix circuit on Saturday, June 3. All-New Ford Fiesta – Raising the Stakes in Compact Car Segment

  • Contemporary new design that is more fluid and elegant – but distinctly Fiesta
  • Revolutionary new interior with unprecedented quality of materials, craftsmanship and cutting-edge technologies
  • Fun-to-drive character enhanced with new suspension, improved safety
  • SYNC®3 connectivity supported by floating high-definition touchscreens up to 8-inches, navigation on Titanium models
PRETORIA, South Africa, 14 May 2018 – The all-new Ford Fiesta is set to raise the stakes in the compact car segment by building on the proud heritage of the very successful outgoing model, while lifting the benchmark significantly in terms of quality, refinement, technology and safety. The Fiesta’s widely acclaimed fun-to-drive character has been lifted to new heights, and its eye-catching new design embodies trend-setting style and sophistication. The revolutionary interior design also takes a big step forward by delivering significant gains in space, comfort, ergonomics and technology. “It’s because we share our customers’ passion for Fiesta that we’ve been able to take this iconic small car’s lovable, fun and sporty-to-drive character to the next level,” says Tracey Delate, General Manager, Marketing at Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa. “Globally, the Fiesta is Ford’s best-selling passenger car, and the all-new model represents a bold step forward in every area, from its attractive styling to the exceptional build quality, the superb craftsmanship evident in the new interior to the unrivalled smart features, safety and technology. “Our multiple award-winning 1.0 EcoBoost engine remains a cornerstone of the Fiesta line-up, with a choice of new six-speed manual or automatic transmissions, along with the option of the frugal 1.5-litre TDCi diesel engine,” Delate adds. The all-new Fiesta is available at launch in two specification levels, comprising the feature-rich Trend series and the range-topping Titanium that boasts an outstanding level of standard equipment. Evolutionary exterior design “We evolved the design to make the all-new Fiesta more contemporary, yet not lose the ‘Fiesta-ness’ that our customers love,” Delate says. “The Fiesta’s exterior builds on the bold styling of the outgoing model, with a more elegant design, and a more fluid and transitional appearance.” Simplified, straighter lines and de-cluttered surfaces deliver more visual strength, while the wider grille defines the upmarket appeal of the Fiesta. Sleek headlamps offer a new wrap-around effect that is immediately recognisable as part of the all-new model’s visual character. The side profile is more settled and less wedge-shaped, combining with 71 mm additional body length and 13 mm additional width to give a longer and more premium appearance. At the rear, new horizontal rear lights further enhance the Fiesta’s widened stance with broad shoulders, and feature a C-shaped signature light pattern. In keeping with the fresh new looks for the Fiesta, Ford has introduced two all-new metallic colour options for the range, comprising Chrome Copper and Blue Wave. Interior comfort and style “Fiesta’s interior is revolutionary in its design and execution,” Delate explains. “The new design will reward customers with unprecedented quality of materials, craftsmanship and cutting-edge technologies for this segment.” The user-centric Fiesta interior execution is influenced by consumer interactions with smart devices and tablets. It delivers a more spacious and premium ambience through the use of ergonomic design and soft-touch materials. The number of buttons on the centre console is reduced by almost half, with many connectivity and entertainment controls relocated to the 6.5-inch touchscreen fitted as standard on the Trend models, or the 8-inch version on the Titanium incorporating SYNC®3 with Navigation. There’s also a stylish new instrument cluster featuring a 4.2-inch multi-function TFT display that delivers an attractive welcome sequence on start-up. Rear seat passengers benefit from 16 mm more knee room, supported by new slim-back seats that are softer, and offer greater side-to-side support. The all-new Fiesta’s tailgate is wider for easier access to the boot, and improved storage for personal belongings is delivered with a 20 percent larger glovebox and a 1-litre storage bin and armrest in the centre console. Rear doors can store 0.6-litre water bottles for road trips. Intrinsic quality “Ford paid a lot of attention to elements and features that customers notice without realising it, from panel gaps to pedal feel,” Delate says. “Fiesta delivers improved quality through enhanced specification, innovative engineering, and sophisticated design, reinforcing the Fiesta team’s obsession with quality that customers will instantly appreciate.” Optimised exterior finishing delivers a more upscale appearance. Parking sensors are now fitted flush with the body panels; windscreen washer nozzles are hidden beneath the upper bonnet lip; there are no visible screws in the taillights or rear fascia; and the shut line between the roof and the rear liftgate is reduced by more than 30 percent. Flush, seamless surfaces continue through the interior. A one-piece centre console connects discreetly to the lower instrument panel for a more harmonious feel, and there are no visible fixings to the floor. A stiffer body structure, reduced powertrain noise vibration and harshness, enhanced powertrain isolation, and an acoustic windshield contribute to a more comfortable and premium driver and passenger experience. Drivers also will find the Fiesta easier to operate day-to-day: windscreen wipers that clear 13 percent more of the windscreen; and doors that require 20 percent less effort to close. Smarter, stronger, safer Fiesta’s active and passive safety systems, combined with a comprehensive range of driver assistance technologies, deliver the highest safety rating yet for this model. The all-new Fiesta body features 36 percent more boron steel for greater strength in key areas. Redesigned door cross sections further protect occupants against side impact intrusion, and the doors also now contain pressure sensors that enable restraint systems to be activated several milliseconds sooner. Front, side and curtain airbags are standard fitment across the range. Innovative restraint features include a locking seatbelt tongue for the driver’s seat belt – a mechanically-activated device that helps prevent slippage of the belt during an accident and eliminates the need for a driver’s knee airbag. Rear outer seats also now feature load limiters and pre-tensioners – previously offered only for front seats occupants – to further restrain passengers and help prevent belt-related injuries. Pedestrian protection is enhanced with headlamps that are designed to travel rearwards on impact, and a collapsible cowl and wiper spindle assembly designed to give way in the event of head impacts. All models boast an extensive list of driving aids, including ABS brakes with Electronic Brake Assist (EBA) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), as well as Hill Launch Assist (HLA) Electronic Stability and Traction Control (ESC). Sophisticated powertrains A simplified range of sophisticated petrol and diesel engines offers performance and fuel efficiency that support an outstanding driving experience and reduced costs for owners. Ford’s six-time International Engine of the Year, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, is offered in two variants in the all-new Fiesta. In the Trend model with a new six-speed manual gearbox, as well as the Trend and Titanium equipped with a conventional six-speed torque converter automatic transmission, the 1.0 EcoBoost produces 74kW of power and 170Nm of torque from 1 500 to 4 000 r/min. The Fiesta Titanium mated with a six-sped manual transmission uses the 92kW version of this engine, to deliver even more exhilarating driving dynamics. Offering the ultimate in frugal fuel consumption, the 1.5-litre TDCi turbodiesel is exclusively available with a six-speed manual gearbox, producing 63kW and a torque peak of 175Nm. Fuel efficiency is further enhanced with Auto-Start-Stop technology on all engines, and a new Eco button for manual transmissions adjusts engine and throttle settings to help drivers save even more fuel. Underbody aero shielding further reduces aero drag. Even more fun to drive “A fun driving experience is central to the Fiesta’s appeal, and our all-new Fiesta remains true to the character that has delighted generations of drivers, with the sharpest, sportiest and most balanced performance yet,” Delate adds. “Offering more style, more refinement, more technology, and more fun, Ford’s best-selling small car is more Fiesta than ever.” A 15 percent increase has been achieved in torsional stiffness, while the front track is 30 mm wider, rear track is up by 10 mm and wheelbase by 4 mm. A lighter, stiffer hollow front anti-roll bar contributes to better roll control and steering feel. Steering friction is reduced and gearboxes now deliver smoother gear changes. The Fiesta’s chassis now offers 10 percent more cornering grip, while braking distances at 100 km/h are reduced by more than 8 percent. Technologically advanced – including SYNC®3 with Navigation An unprecedented range of technologies enhance Fiesta comfort, convenience and safety. Ford’s SYNC®3 communications and entertainment system enables Fiesta drivers to control audio, navigation and connected smartphones using simple, conversational voice commands. The system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (once launched for the collective Middle East and Africa region). The Fiesta’s floating, tablet-inspired 8-inch colour touchscreen and infotainment system with built-in turn-by-turn navigation is standard on the Titanium, and can be operated with pinch and swipe gestures. The Trend model also incorporates SYNC®3, using a floating 6.5-inch colour touchscreen. Reflecting the consumer shift towards portable digital multimedia, Fiesta delivers Bluetooth connectivity and two USB ports as standard, with an integrated CD player on all models. A high-end seven-speaker sound system is featured on the Fiesta Titanium models, with a six-speaker set-up on the Trend models. Isuzu ChildLife Foundation Supports Ironman 4 the Kids Project in Walmer Township

PORT ELIZABETH – Providing sustainable solutions through solid partnerships is fundamental to Isuzu Motors South Africa’s (IMSAf) business philosophy. Based on this philosophy, the Isuzu ChildLife Foundation and IMSAf donated R400 000 to the IRONMAN 4 the Kidz Charity Trust to build a crèche in Walmer Township in Port Elizabeth. Situated next to the Sakhasonke Village in Walmer Township, the creche will provide much-needed space to a current crèche owner operating from her home, providing care to 27 children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years. The new building will be big enough to accommodate a total of 50 children. IMSAf’s Corporate Communications Manager Gishma Johnson said the Isuzu has had a longstanding partnership with the triathlon organisers, which started over eight years ago. “We are very excited to partner with the Trust on the building of the crèche, since this is a legacy project that fits in perfectly with our corporate social responsibility goals of adding value to the community in a sustainable manner,” said Johnson. One of the partners in this initiative, Touch Africa, will ensure that this initiative is sustainable and measurable, said Touch Africa Trustee Mike Glover. “The creche will also be built by artisans residing in Walmer Township and will create employment for at least 10 labourers during the 8-week build. Isuzu has had a long relationship with Touch Africa, who over the last five years have built 45 Libraries and five creches and Isuzu has played a major role in delivery of materials and books,” Glover said. Speaking at the official sod-turning, IRONMAN 4 the Kidz trustee and co-founder Gary Stephenson said the plan was for the 70 square meter crèche building, which will consist of a classroom, kitchen, veranda and bathroom, to be completed by August this year. “This creche is situated on the route of the cycling leg of the triathlon and it is important for us to leave a legacy of the continent’s biggest challenge. The aim is to have the building completed in time for the IRONMAN World Champs,” Stephenson said. 2018 is a busy year for the Friendly City, with a second IRONMAN event, the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, taking place in Port Elizabeth – the first city on the African continent to host the highly competitive competition. “We would like to show these athletes what we are doing in the country for the children, through the help of the IRONMAN fraternity and generous corporate sponsors, such as Isuzu,” said Stephenson. IRONMAN 4 the Kidz has this year exceeded its target to collect R2.2-million for the various charity organisations they support. The trust has been in existence for 14 years and has distributed over R17.2-million to a wide range of beneficiaries. Similarly, the Isuzu ChildLife Foundation, a partnership between IMSAf and the dealer network, has successfully supported 67 underprivileged child-focused projects across South Africa in the past eight years.
