A breakdown or collapse in a business partnership or even a personal relationship can be painful – there’s no doubt!  However, it can also be a very liberating experience and catalyst to create other wonderful opportunities that you would never have had before.  In order to survive, and dare I say thrive, in your business or personal life, there is some self-reflection and work that needs to be done before you can get there.  This includes:
  1. Taking responsibility. Before you begin examining how and why things went wrong, you have to accept your part in what has happened.  If you own your share in the breakdown, it will help to inform you how you could either save your current relationship or put together a new life for yourself – having learnt some lessons about old patterns, behaviours and what you are willing to tolerate or not.  Don’t play the blame game as you give away your power and allow others to control your emotions!  Instead, look at what you can learn from this and use it to grow.

  1. Getting clarity. Clarity gives you power.  Knowledge is a vital tool that decreases uncertainty.  The unknown can be very destabilising and, if everything you believed to be safe and secure is suddenly threatened, it is terrifying.  Having a clear understanding of what is happening and what is to come will be vital to get you through the process.

  1. Taking control. You control how you feel and how you choose to react.  Don’t live your life in reaction – it is exhausting and energy sapping!  Take back your control and decide how you want to feel.  You are in charge of your thoughts, behaviour and outlook.

  1. Focus on moving forward positively. Don’t dwell on the past.  Keep looking forward and put your energy into creating a future you want to live – deal with what has happened, change things and move forward.

  1. Building a support network. The biggest misconception is that people going through these relationship breakdowns have to figure this out alone, and the reality is that you don’t!  It is very important to build a support team around you whom you can trust and rely on.  This could include a financial advisor, business colleges, mediator/attorney, coach, psychologist etc.
As Marilyn Monroe once said ‘everything happens for a reason… sometimes good things fall apart so better things can come together’ and the above is certainly a big step in moving forward to creating another good thing.   About Alexa: My passion is helping people help themselves.  This passion has developed over decades throughout my own journey of seeking, falling and rising – most recently after experiencing the breakdown of my own personal relationship.  Through coaching, mentoring and training I have been supported, guided, encouraged and challenged, leading me to want to give back and help people navigate their journey to become the best version of themselves – happy, healthy and productive individuals with a deep sense of purpose and wellbeing.   Alexa Stafford is a Certified Integral Coach, who is passionate about partnering with her clients on their journey of becoming the best versions of themselves.  Visit www.alexacoaching.com for further details or contact her on 082 871 3321 or via email at alexa@alexacoaching.com
